July 'Clean Eating' Challenge - How it will work.

The Challenge aims to improve participants’ nutritional knowledge and to foster “clean” eating habits. The Challenge draws upon the growing body of evidence which suggests that a diet that closely approximates our ancestors’ diet 20,000 years ago constitutes optimum nutrition. We believe that the best way to explain to participants the benefits of eating this way is to encourage them to experience it for themselves.

Challenge Structure

The Challenge will run throughout July. Participants will commit to individual Challenge goals by signing and submitting the Challenge Statement (See Below - copy, fill in and hand in). Progress toward these goals will be monitored by individual Food Journals (see left) which participants may choose to share with other participants. Participants will establish individual goals by completing the Physiological State Survey and the Diet Survey (see left) and using their results to establish at which level they will buy into the Challenge. The Challenge buy in levels are based upon the 12 steps to Optimum Health developed by www.archevore.com.

The Buy in Levels:

Entry Level*:
Eliminate sugar from your diet (eliminate all white sugar, brown sugar ,lollies, honey, maple syrup, molasses, corn syrup, flavoured yoghurts, flavoured milks, fruit juice, cordial, soft drink, minimise fruit intake etc).
The Challenge entry level is to implement step 1 of the 12 steps to Optimum Health. While implementing only a single step from the 12 may not seem significant, given the pervasiveness of sugar in the standard diet and associated insulin response, this step will have a significant impact upon your wellbeing, particularly if you are at the start of your journey to Optimum Health.

Moderate Level*:
Eliminate sugar and grains from your diet (see above as well as grains (even ‘whole’ grains) rice, cereals, flour, cornstarch, bread, pastas, muffins, bagels, crackers etc)
The moderate Challenge level is to implement steps 1 and 3 of the 12 steps to Optimum Health. While implementing only 2 of the 12 steps may not seem significant, given the pervasiveness of sugar and grains in the standard diet and associated insulin response and other negative effects, these steps are significant milestones on your journey to Optimum Health.

Advanced Level*:
Implement all 12 steps in order (1=>12).
Participants at this level are essentially “fine tuning” their diet to achieve Optimum Health by implementing the remaining 10 steps not prescribed for the other levels.

*Participants at all levels are encouraged to tailor the challenge to their individual situation. For example, a participant at the Entry Level may also wish to participate in Dry July and eliminate alcohol from their diet during the Challenge. It is essential that participants attempt to adhere to any commitment made regardless of their level of participation.
