Tips for a successful July.

1. The right attitude is all important. If you feel you are depriving yourself by cutting out something, then you will never truly embrace 'clean eating'. See the change as a positive action that is going to make you healthier. You don't need what you don't have.

2. Clean out your pantry/fridge and re-stock with 'real food'. Real food goes off. It doesn't keep for weeks/months without spoiling.

3. Cut out sugar in all forms - fruit juice, cordial, mixers, honey, golden syrup, lollies, table sugar, too much fruit, cakes, biscuits etc.....

4. Don't have 'treats' or 'tempting' foods in the house. You will eat them!

5. Eat good fats. If you are dropping carbohydrates/sugars out of your diet, you need to replace them with something. Protein is self limiting and hence, you will need to increase your fat intake. Cook with butter, lard, gee, coconut oil. Limit vegetable oils/canola oils/sunflower oils etc.

6. Don't worry about eating at 'meal times' as such. As your body gets used to using it's fat stores, you will eat when you are hungry. This may be at different times than what you are used too.

7. Don't eat low fat or diet foods. They contain sugar to make them taste better.

8.Look into cheap cuts of meat that can be curried/slow cooked or braised. A slow cooker is a non expensive kitchen friend that every home should have.

9. Think about going cold turkey rather than cutting back. An addiction is still an addiction whether you have a bag of lollies a day, a packet or a few.

10. Share your stories and ideas.

Stay tuned!

  1. Congratulations to all those who have signed up for 'Clean Eating July' (and to all those who are still contemplating - it's not to late to get on board!). I think it's great that so many people have committed to this challenge and are helping to get the message out there. So to get the discussion ball rolling....

I love the name 'Clean Eating July', it sums up perfectly this way of eating. There is a plethora of contradictory and insanely crazy dietary advice floating around and it can be hard to figure out what to believe. The clean eating ethos based on the 12 steps for optimal health definitely makes sense to me and keeps things simple. No weighing of ingredients, counting of points, attending to complex calculations of calories in and out, no restrictive lists of what you can and cant eat, just real food, eaten when your hungry.

This is not to say 'clean eating' is not without its challenges. I have been eating this way for the past 19 months and it certainly took me awhile to fully adjust. I was initially very anxious about adopting a way of eating that largely went against all those 'trusted' nutritional messages. Plus how would i eat my eggs without toast? and what would i eat for lunch if not sandwiches? If you're feeling a bit like this, I bet you're not alone. Let's use this blog to share our concerns and questions - someone in the group is bound to have an answer. If you're up for it, it would be great if people started blogging what they've been eating and when, this will help give others ideas and help to 'normalise' this way of eating.

    Here's my intake for 01/07/11
9am(ish):2xlarge coffees made with creamy full fat milk, mashed avocado and cold chicken
11am:Full fat natural yoghurt and mixed berries
    4pm:Avocado and cheese
9pm: Porterhouse steak, mushroom sauce, broccoli, pumpkin, 2xglasses of white (oh yes no dry July for me!)

My biggest problem concerns drinking water - I rarely drink enough and last night woke at 1am feeling really thirsty. If anyone has any suggestions regarding how i can get more H20 on board it would be greatly appreciated? Also does anyone know a butcher that sells kangaroo steaks and best tips for cooking?

    3,2 1 go........

  3. Hey Em,
Yeah i'm excited about this challenge, but as i have been eating cleaner and cleaner since i had that 1st Nutrition class with AS, i feel it will be a great measure of my eating habits.

I have ramped up my water intake over the last few months, By drinking a heap as soon as i wake up, and carrying my water bottle with me everywhere.

As for Kangaroo cooking i think its best cooked @ high heat on the Bbq grill, but its a bit hit and miss, so i tend to use the Kangaroo Paties now, or cut the steaks thinner.

    Hope this helps?

  4. Hey Em, first challenge for me will be skipping my pre-work shot tonight. Damn you Dry July!

For water intake I make sure I have a water bottle close by during the day. Convenient and lets you know how much you're drinking as well.

Kangaroo is tricky as you can easily overcook it which makes it tough to eat. It's not something you cook while doing other things (preparing something else, etc) just make sure you keep an eye on it and keep the heat moderate. Cooking to medium-rare i best. Tasfarmgate.com have a farmer's market type thing every Sunday @melville st car park, lots of meat (usually free range) there as well as fruit, veggies, etc.

    Yesterday's intake:

7am-ish: 2 eggs, garlic butter, tuna, red onion.
11am: carrot sticks and almond butter.
    1:20pm: tuna and red onion.
8pm-ish: steak, garlic butter, lettuce, cauliflower, coconut milk. (+fish oil and vitamin D supp)

    Today's intake:
8:30am: Breakfast with CF42S guys. Eggs, meat something... and spinach. Plenty of water post-WOD.
1pm: steak, lettuce, garlic butter, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots. coconut water.
6:30pm: steak, lettuce, garlic butter, coconut milk, cauliflower, broccoli.

  7. Like everyone else has said Em, keep the bottle with you at all times, and certainly i drink at least a litre straight up in the morning...followed by coffee :)

Food diary...food diary...food diary. I cant recommend these things enough. I was very hesitant initially but since i have started one, my eating although already quiet clean, has become crystal clear clean. Knowing i have to achnowledge it on paper really makes me aware of what i am puting into my body. If you are keeping one of these, and you do have a mini "fail", remember your only one good meal from being back on the right path so dont punish yourself to much. Thats not an excuse to have a cheat though.

I tried the cauli-fried rice the other night again, and it worked out great. Had it with a Pork and pumpkin curry in coconut cream, and some cheese over the top. Highly recommend this as a replacement for rice.

My journey has been a long and eventful one and i have made no effort to hide it, so please if you have any questions, please feel free to askn as i started with the worst of nutrition and habits, and if i dont know the answer i will either find out or point you in the direction of a resource who/that will.

We only get out of life what we put into it, same goes for our bodies.

  8. Well it only took me three days but I have finally figured out how to blog! I also made myself a google account or something plus managed to get a mail order bride from romania.
Anyway just thought I would add in my thoughts/ experience.
Em, something that may help with the water intake is a camel back or water bladder. Some people hate them for a variety of reason, but others love them. They can be very useful cause you can drink when ever, when your walking around town or driving in the car, you tend to drink more frequently as you dont have to open and close/ get your drink bottle out as much. Just a thought, like i said before there not for everyone.
Well its been three days and so far I think that Kate and I have been doing well, I have avoided all sugar and grains and kate has avoided all grains that contain gluten (still having some rice), sugar and food she is intolerant to (eggs, dairy and nuts!)I to am keeping a food diary, this is a first for me and is a excellent way to keep myself accountable (insert everything that Cam said here) anyway here we go!
    July 1
8.30 am coffee with full cream milk, 3 eggs, 3 slices of bacon.
9.45 am paleo muffin (simons recipe)

    July 2nd
